What is NITOS?

NITOS was set up as a result of the need for a centre dedicated to research and study of the Theatre Organ.  An additional need was felt for a central point for the safe storage of archive material, which which could be available for reference and study purposes.  The Scottish Theatre Organ Preservation Society recognised this need and has set up NITOS which makes it possible to study the history of the instrument, learn about the tonal qualities, playing techniques, and workings of the instrument, all under the one roof.  The Institute is housed in the New Palace Centre,  which is the home of the Scottish Theatre Organ Preservation Society.  A major advantage of this arrangement is the access to the theatre pipe organs at the Centre.

The Aims of the Institute

To promote the awareness of the Theatre Pipe Organ to the benefit of the General Public.

To promote the teaching of the skills necessary to play these historically valuable instruments.

To promote the teaching of the abilities to maintain these unique instruments.

To develop a large Archive of material which will cover at least the following areas :-

  1. A library of music, of all types, and from all eras, which can be performed on the organ.

  2. A library of recorded material orchestral, vocal and solo organ to allow people to 'listen' and understand the requirements of good orchestration and phrasing.

  3. A library of films, both silent and sound, to allow performers to acquire the knowledge of both how to accompany a silent film, and how to 'play in' a soundtrack.

  4. A library of research material on 'how the organ works', its history and development.

  5. A library of reference material on how to maintain these historic instruments to help them achieve their best.

It is the intention that eventually the resources of the Institute will be available via the Internet, certainly for at least enquiry purposes, for all to use, and that Summer Schools will be set up, when Master Classes will be held.  A long term aim is to be  able to develop complete courses, where individuals may study and gain recognised qualifications in either the maintenance, presentation, or performing skills.
